The aim of this paper is to present the role of market structure and competitive framework for sound of European Union (EU) banking sector, with particular emphasis on the change in concentration and competition, in an attempt to determine the relationship between size and competition and risk-taking by European Union banks.
The empirical results based on panel data analysis using GMM find that the banking sectors with EU-27 are not homogeneous and find asymmetry between performance of EU-15 and EU-12 banking sectors. In fact, we have obtained different results concerning the impact of competition and size on financial stability for EU-15 banks (i.e., large banking sectors) and for EU-12 (i.e., small banking
sectors). Factor having a positive impact on stability in the banking sectors of the EU-15 is competition, while in the banking sectors of the EU-12 this factor is market power. Generally, we find that the size of the banking sector estimated as the share of assets in GDP has a negative impact on the stability of the banking sectors in both (the EU-15 and EU-12). In addition, we find that the ability to repay loans is procyclical especially in the EU-12.

The article presents the importance of cultural barriers, in particular ethnocentrism (both national and institutional), to the management of banks controlled by foreign capital in Poland. It was based on a review of literature and the author’s own studies – interviews with senior executives of banks and other representatives of the banking community. The author tries to show that cultural factors, which have important influence on the results achieved by the banks. The cultural context shouldn’t be considered separately. It must be analysed with other conditionsof bank performance and development. Therefore, a deterministic manner isn’t
recommended, but it is supposed the holistic approach to this research field.

In this paper we analyse the factors determining banks’ credit growth in Poland from 1995 to 2014, with special attention paid to the ownership structure of banks (state-owned, foreign-owned, domestic-private owned) and the impact of the global financial crisis. We find out that the leading determinants of the credit growth are overall economic situation (measured by GDP growth) and the growth of banks equity capital. We identified certain differences in factors determining banks’ credit growth for different types of ownership and two sub-periods.

The main objective of the article was to show the impact of the programme “Family 500+” on increase of income levels, credit rating and a debt structure of households in economically underdeveloped regions. As the example of the underdeveloped region a Podkarpackie voivodeship was used, while in the researchstatistical data concerning income, expenditures and debt of households for this voivodeship and whole country were used. The article contains a proposition of a method of calculation an impact of the programme “Family 500+” on the increase of credit rating, that could be adapted by financial institutions, simultaneously being a voice in a discussion about consequences of introduction the programme “Family 500+”.

The paper presents the differences in household propensity to possess managed accounts in the Eurozone countries. The reason to analyse this problem was the adoption of the EU post-crisis regulation about limited use of these deposits for providing high-quality, stable funding for credit institutions in periods of stress and in long-term. The results prove unequal popularity of managed accounts among households from individual countries of the euro area. The research allows to identify factors determining their occurrence, which refer to wealth and socio-demographic features of the respective owners. Heterogeneity of statistically significant sets of covariates for individual countries leads to the conclusion about the limited significance of the single regulation

The Supreme Court rightly pointed out in judgement, that dereliction by the bank immediate action leading to update in the Credit Information Bureau (BIK) data concerning the borrower’s unpaid (low) debt is contrary the principles forpersonal data processing  set out in the Personal Data Protection Act of 29 August 1997 (consolidated text Official Journal of the Republic of Poland of 2015 pos. 2135, as amended, hereinafter referred to as u.o.d.o.). The infringement (by bank) of the principles for personal data processing, set
out in the u.o.d.o., may lead to violations of a borrower’s dignity. This is because, members of modern consumer society perceive the access to the market of loan services as “the right of the prudent borrower” and illegal limitation or exclusion to this access as a matter of great importance.
